Abstract

Conventional diagnosis of periodontal diseases mainly relies on the clinical evaluation of periodontal tissues and use of a periodontal probe is a mandatory. Radiographic investigation of the calcified tissues also provides valuable information on the extent and severity of periodontal tissue destruction. Despite the improvements took place in recent years, clinical periodontal measurements still pose some shortcomings in providing an accurate diagnosis for the clinicians. This chapter provides an outline of the up-to-date clinical diagnostic methods together with the 2017 classification system for periodontal diseases.
