Abstract
Arthur Miller often is credited with focusing on what became two central themes in American drama: the family and the betrayal of the American Dream. This chapter explores the way these themes are reconfigured and enhanced by several distinguished American woman playwrights: Lorraine Hansberry, Marsha Norman, Anna Deavere Smith, Suzan-Lori Parks, Lynn Nottage, and Annie Baker. Like Miller, these American dramatists acknowledge theater as an important vehicle of social change and share a commitment to staging American family life in innovative ways.
