Abstract

The first two sections of this chapter consider Brasília’s reputation as a cultural wasteland and soulless city, arguing how contemporary artists have contested this image. These sections elaborate the book’s main argument that artists frame the capital as a vibrant city of the arts in which art asserts a creative right to the city. The third section defines my term creative right to the city, a concept that incorporates (yet seeks to overcome the ambiguities of) Lefebvre’s terms the right to the city and oeuvre. My term refers to citizens’ ability to represent their city publicly via the arts and have public space be a site where they can come together to enjoy and make art. A fourth section defines key terms, and a fifth section elaborates on my engagement with the concept of public space. The final section discusses my subject position and methodology.
