Abstract
Collective activities, such as most music and sport, require co-ordination because they highlight individuals’ interdependence. Sustainability and economic security are undermined by growing inequalities of income and status; liberal democracy needs to be underpinned by bonds of community and association to resist populist authoritarianism.
