Abstract
The past 50 years have seen, especially in the USA and UK, the decline of ‘moral regulation’—the processes by which members of families and communities conduct their relationships—and its replacement by ‘contractual regulation’ (how businesses strike bargains and hold each other to account). New forms of solidarity require a renaissance of social relations based on reciprocity, respect and the sense of belonging together.
