Abstract

Individual choice has become the basis for the market-based social order. Along with the collective life of communities, solidarity is undermined by such coercive features as ‘sanctions’ against claimants of means-tested benefits. The UBI proposal offers the basis for an alternative, which upholds freedom but allows solidarities to flourish.
