Food Security and Land Use Change under Conditions of Climatic Variability

Synopsis

One of the significant sustainability issues in Southeast Asia is the frequency of forest fires which occur every year during the hot season on the islands Sumatera and Kalimantan in Indonesia. Such fires rage during the summer season and bring haze to most Southeast Asian countries. These frequent forest fires cause damage and losses in terms of health, environment, social and economics and have a negative impact on extractive activities; timber, palm oil, and other commodities. The case study is from LembahHijau 2 village located beside the palm oil plantation company belonging to Sinarmas Agribusiness and Food in the Nanga Tayap district, West Kalimantan in Indonesia. This chapter aims to analyze the role of a non-state actor such as business to shape the environmental governance in an effort to prevent forest and wild fire at local scale, and to also address the global issues: climate change, disaster risk, sustainable development goals (SDGs). The Fire Free Village (Desa Makmur Perduli Api) program focused on two activities: The Fire Management System program and the Community Empowerment program (Fire Alert Community and Integrated Ecological Farming programs). The Fire Alert Community program was successful to reduce the fire hot spots from 158 in 2015 to only 7 in 2017. Further, the Integrated Ecological Farming program saves 300,000 IDR (~30SGD) per family per month and generates 500,000 IDR (~50SGD) per family per month of additional income. This program successfully delivered multiple benefits: reducing forest fires, creating resilience, enhancing food security and alleviating poverty.

Note: Exchange rate in 2017: 1 USD~ 13,380 IDR, 1 SGD ~ 10,000 IDR.
