Abstract
We examine the emergence and degree of adoption of concepts associated with quality improvement in healthcare, much of which developed within other sectors of industry. At the same time, ideas of patient involvement and participation have gained ground, but it is noticeable that the two trajectories have emerged, developed and spread in parallel rather than together. Yet they have much in common and much to contribute to the wellbeing of service users. In this chapter we focus on the literature dating from emergence of ideas about improvement that appeared a decade ago but which have not maintained initial enthusiasm, We ask why this is the case and why the two trajectories have developed in parallel rather than in concert.
