Abstract
The countries of the world have seen a large-scale development movement with population growth, industrialization and urbanization, which have had a negative impact on agricultural land. This has been particularly damaging for developing countries that lack the means and capabilities to protect the environment and control urban mobility. Algeria is among the developing countries where the agricultural area is only 3.5%, which is 8.4 million hectares of the total area and is prone to urban sprawl as a result of the growth of cities. Statistics show that Algiers has doubled more than twice since the mid-1960s at the cost of agricultural land in the Mitidja plain in the North of Algeria (Rapport sur l’état de l’avenir de l’environnement, 2003). If this situation continues, the remaining agricultural land will be easily taken over by urbanization. In this article, the primary focus is on the means and methods that can be harnessed to control and conserve the agricultural lands and activities near urban agglomerations, using the experience in some other countries such as Canada and France, an analysis of satellite data on agricultural and non-agricultural land use to obtain useful results, and discussion of a research action process the conditions of which can be used to conserve good quality agricultural land and valued farm activities such as food production.
