Abstract
This chapter explores documents in two archives. Correspondence in the National Archives of Kew provides more information on the contact linguistics of the Barbary region and relates that to the use of Lingua Franca and its diffusion. Research into Hugo Schuchardt’s Archive demonstrates Lingua Franca’s longevity and ongoing evolution even at the close of the nineteenth century. The correspondence therein provides further data to add to the extant corpus.

Notes
- 1.
Teschera ‘pass, edict’ might appear to come from the Italian tessera ‘pass, ticket’ but there is equally an Arabic word taðkira/taðkara/tazkira/tazakara (all variant realizations of the same item), meaning ‘permit’ or ‘ticket’.
- 2.
The use of obligo.
- 3.
I am struck that my initial translation was ‘Look to God for a sign’, a rendering of Mira segnio Dios.
- 4.
Olla Podrida, literally ‘a Spanish stew of meat and vegetables’ signifies a miscellany, a hodgepodge.
- 5.
A debate on Lingua Franca’s status as a language played out in the fortnightly magazine over the spring and summer of 1877. The two men involved were Hyde Clark, a literary polymath and Louis-Lucien Bonaparte, the nephew of the Emperor, and a philologist of European languages. It was Bonaparte’s contention that Lingua Franca was an independent Italian dialect.
- 6.
Houdas was a professor of French and Arabic at the Paris School of Languages. His dogmatic discouragement (and disparagement of Lingua Franca) should be considered in the context of Morel-Fatio’s suggestion to Schuchardt to contact Houdas without mentioning that he had been advised to since Houdas would thus consider himself famous and thereby feel gratified to think that Schuchardt was seeking his expert opinion.
