Abstract

The present research study aimed at investigating the effect of additions of Ce and La rare earth (RE ) elements on intermetallic formation in Al-1.2Si-2.4Cu-0.4 Mg-0.4Fe-0.6Mn-0.15Ti (wt%) alloy, coded B0. Microstructural characteristics were examined under low solidification rate (~0.7°C/s). The result show that two main types of RE -containing intermetallic phases were formed: (i) a grey phase in the form of sludge, with a fixed composition Al21Ti2RE (Ce /La ), and (ii) white RE -containing intermetallic phases (resulting from reaction of the RE (Ce /La ) with Si, Fe, and Cu); the latter exhibited several compositions: Al11RE(Ce /La )3(Cu,Fe)4Si2, Al4Ce 3Si2, Al5La 3Si2 and Al6La 2(Cu,Fe)2Si.
