Abstract
Registers are used for storing data. Two or more flip-flops are cascaded in registers. n-bit register requires n flip-flops for storing n bits of data. The operation of storage registers, shift registers and universal shift register are presented. Four applications of shift registers are illustrated with examples. The applications are Ring counter, Johnson counter, Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) and Serial adder.
