Tabes dorsalis is a degeneration (in fact, demyelination) of the neural tracts primarily in the dorsal columns of the spinal cord (the portion closest to the back of the body) and dorsal roots. These are the nerves that help maintain the sense of position (proprioception), vibration and discriminatory touch in a healthy person. Its manifestation is termed locomotor ataxia.
