Notes

  1. 1.

Bernstein’s note: The glands of internal secretion.

  2. 2.

Verigo, Bronislav Fortunatovich (1860–1925) was a Russian physiologist. He was a student of I. M. Sechenov and Georgian physiologist I. R. Tarkhanov (1846–1908) and later worked under the guidance of I. I. Mechnikov (1845–1916), zoologist and pioneer of immunology.

  3. 3.

Alcohol affects brain synapses directly, affecting balance, rather than dissolving away the myelin sheaths of nerves as Bernstein seems to be saying here.

  4. 4.

Tabes dorsalis is a degeneration (in fact, demyelination) of the neural tracts primarily in the dorsal columns of the spinal cord (the portion closest to the back of the body) and dorsal roots. These are the nerves that help maintain the sense of position (proprioception), vibration and discriminatory touch in a healthy person. Its manifestation is termed locomotor ataxia.
