Abstract
Confronted with a VUCA world, the editors have initiated in this edition a dramatic shift in the focus of this Handbook. As can be seen in the titles of the different parts, the focus is now primarily on problems rather than on things. By doing so, the functionality of instructional design/technology and its relevance are stressed. Together with an International Advisory Board, a framework for categorizing important educational issues was elaborated. That framework provides the structure for the research chapters in this Handbook. While the shift has been initiated, more work is to be done to complete the maneuver.
