Moderate Sedation and Emergency Medicine for Periodontists

Abstract

The majority of anesthetic-related mishaps occur due to the inability to predict and/or manage a difficult airway. When a patient enters a level of deep sedation, there is no guarantee that he or she will be able to maintain their airway in a patent state or ventilate or oxygenate themselves properly. It is the responsibility of the provider to ensure the patency of the airway and the adequacy of ventilation. Methods of airway management and ventilation are essential to the safety of sedation and anesthesia, and must be mastered by any individual desiring to provide moderate sedation. Techniques for recognition and management of airway problems are described in detail, and the use of airway adjunct devices is illustrated.

He lives most life whoever breathes most air.
