Abstract
The increasing number of English abbreviated forms appearing in textbooks and academic discourse is one of the challenges facing language planners, terminologists, authors and translators of scientific texts in some countries, including Iran. This Chapter defines the challenge of English abbreviated forms in Persian, and explains how the increasing number of borrowed English abbreviated forms in Persian persuaded Iranian terminology planners to encourage abbreviation, as a word/term formation method, through the framework of an official terminological plan. It will also review past evaluations of the plan and provide an update regarding the remaing gaps that will be bridged by the current study.
