Abstract
The chapter starts defining the built environment and its main features, following the international standards and codes. The trends in the development of the built environment are analysed, and the community concept is defined considering these trends and the specifics observed in the urban and rural areas. The energy demand in the built environment is discussed at building and community level, and the use of smart design for the development or the refurbishment of the built environment is well justified considering the required thermal and electrical energy. This energy demand is comparatively presented for various locations all over the world, and the option for green buildings or sustainable buildings is discussed in direct relation with rating systems as BREEAM, LEEDS, HK-BEAM, Green Star, CASBEE, DGNB and HQE. Further on, the Community modules parts of these rating systems are comparatively discussed along with examples already developed at world level.
