Abstract
My interactions with Gyorgy Kepes (1906–2001) followed from my first edited volume on symmetry. He immigrated to America from Hungary in 1937 and spelled his first name as Gyorgy. He was a design scientist and artist, wrote much about art theory, and was Professor of Design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His book series, Vision + Value, served as a model when I embarked on organizing the Symmetry: Unifying Human Understanding volumes. At the time, I was a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut in 1983–1985, the first year in the Department of Physics and the second year in the Department of Chemistry.
