Abstract
Our Hungarian book about symmetry for children with lots of images appeared in 1989. We were close to the political changes, but state subsidy for book publishing still existed. The book sold out quickly and additional printing was not possible due to the disappearance of state support. The book was exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair where it caught the eye of an American publisher, Lloyd Kahn (1935–). His company, Shelter Publications in Bolinas, California, was a one-person enterprise. Lloyd was the owner, editor in chief, and most employees were family members. Our interactions brought us a unique publishing experience.
