Abstract
It was a gray November day in 1967 in Budapest. I was staying at home with a broken leg in our sublet on József Boulevard. Magdi went to the airport to meet our guest, Professor Otto Bastiansen (1918–1995) of Oslo University. He was not our personal guest; rather, he was coming at the official invitation by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Magdi was a fourth-year student, majoring in chemistry at Eötvös University and I was a junior research associate in a research laboratory of the Academy. We had been married for 3 months and neither of us spoke good English. We had never spoken with Bastiansen, but I saw him at a meeting 1 year before. I could describe him to Magdi as a peripatetic man with an engaging smile.
