Abstract

This Reader provides comprehensive, inquiry-based analysis of curriculum issues by challenging the compartmentalized understanding of theory and curriculum foundations through multiple perspectives. In the introductory chapter, we provide an overview of the book and its focus on twentieth-century curriculum and schooling that transcends familiar theoretical debates to delve into the details of the daily lives of teachers, students, and communities. We use this as a starting point to reapproach curriculum history from the perspective of educators and students. How did teachers teach in the past? What did students do? What was school like in the past? Through a close examination of these questions, readers can see the many ways schooling and education in a broader sense has changed and remained consistent since 1900.
