Abstract
The Hausa people have for centuries evolved, through trial and error, a body of knowledge for securing their lives and property as well as in the general conduct of their daily affairs. This chapter is framed within the context of indigenous knowledge systems and their contribution to food security through indigenous food preservation and storage techniques among the Hausa people of Northern Nigeria. The chapter is premised upon the fact that household and individual food security is crucial for the attainment of national food security. Qualitative methods of data collection and analysis will be utilized to enable us to closely interact with our resource persons. The research uncovered that the Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, through a thorough understanding of their environment, did evolve reliable methods of storage and preservation of their food items to ensure access to enough food for future consumption. And that government patronage of indigenous knowledge of food storage could go a long way in minimizing food losses resulting from postharvest practices and save for the country considerable foreign exchange spent on food importation.
