How to Predict Location Privacy Behaviour?

Abstract

In this work, a questionnaire instrument was developed in order to estimate the relationships between privacy attitudes and actual behaviours as discussed in the Chap. 2. This chapter describes in detail the construction of the questionnaire, named Location Privacy Beliefs and Attitudes (LPBA). Following the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) (cf. Sect. 2.1.3) the final LPBA questionnaire is intended as a tool to measure privacy disclosing and protection behaviours in the context of location. First the selection and creation of items is presented. Existing validated questionnaires were used when available, in particular, for a construct measuring risk perception, the internet users’ information privacy concern scale (IUIPC) was modified and deployed. In the early stages of the development of the questionnaire, five constructs were assessed (Risk Perception, Benefit Perception, Privacy Calculus, Perceived Norm, and Perceived Control). The development was done throughout various empirical studies and using structural equation modelling. The final LPBA questionnaire consists of three constructs: Risk Perception, Benefit Perception, and Perceived Norm.

In order to address also the background factors influencing LPBA, two constructs were evaluated—an existing scale for privacy concern was assessed, and a construct measuring users’ knowledge with respect to location privacy was created.
