Vertebral Compression Fractures in Osteoporotic and Pathologic Bone

Abstract

Kyphoplasty is performed to treat symptomatic osteoporotic or pathologic acute or subacute vertebral body compression fractures of the thoracic or lumbar spine. A unilateral or bilateral transpedicular approach may be safely utilized for up to three fractures at one time. The ability to treat potential complications is mandatory if performing the procedure. Awareness of cement viscosity and injection volume is important with regard to timing of injecting cement during a kyphoplasty procedure to minimize cement-related complications.
