Abstract
As an introduction to the book, this chapter outlines key characteristics about the role of international organizations in general and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in particular in terms of global governance. This chapter thus also outlines some of the main research positions in the field and introduces the term governing complex. This chapter then presents a discussion on the role of history in global policy studies and argues that historical approaches contribute vital insights to our understanding of the contemporary workings of global governance in education. Finally, this chapter briefly introduces the structure of the book, including its three thematic sections and the chapters in each section.
