Abstract
This chapter provides an overall account of Greek teenagers’ out-of-school engagements with English, including the key motivations, features and characteristics of these engagements. In particular, by presenting, describing and classifying teenagers’ most prominent activities into larger categories and typologies, I pay attention to clarifying the potentially influential role of key parameters such as teenagers’ gender, level of academic achievement and English language proficiency, their preference for print/digital media, language choice and texts involved, among others. Overall, this chapter serves the purpose of putting forward the argument that young teenagers are active users of English outside school walls and of illustrating the important role that English plays in youngsters’ everyday lives today, a point that the rest of the book further strengthens.
