Abstract

Innovation is generally recognized as one of the key drivers, if not the main one, for the economic growth and development of a country. Policy-makers are responsible for creating the conditions in which innovation and technology can develop and make a difference, especially in advanced economies. This chapter addresses the main sources of funding for entrepreneurs and start-ups. We will discuss the financial constraints, or the financing gap, that affects the start-ups and small-medium enterprises (SMEs), with a focus on the early stages. Moreover, the chapter will provide an overview of Venture Capital and Corporate Venture Capital, as they are the organizations, which provide finance to innovative firms that are the most crucial and game-changing in the life of a young company. Finally, we will explain who Venture Capitalists and Corporate Venture Capitalists are, how they operate, how they are structured, and what their main goals are.
