Abstract

I present the science studies perspective used in this book and explain why environmental participation is addressed as a distinct type of public engagement. Origin stories of environmental participation are outlined and a practice-based distinction between environmental participation in science, decision making and expertise is introduced. This distinction is explained and applied in a presentation of the key concepts used to discuss participatory practices in this book. The characteristics of participating publics are considered and finally, I outline the content of the subsequent four chapters.
