English for Specific Purposes Instruction and Research

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to check nursing students’ satisfaction with specific language tasks practising social skills and competencies useful at work. The implementation of English language activities performed in the ESP classes for student nurses at PWSZ in Tarnów aimed at developing their social competencies has been in place for two years, however, their reception and feedback from students have not been formally gathered and assessed. So far, there have been not many studies assessing students’ satisfaction with particular types of language activities developing verbal and non-verbal reactions oriented at job-related social competencies in ESP classes. The researchers have adapted the PERMA model, grounded in Positive Psychology, to evaluate the satisfaction of nursing students with language activities. The results confirm the importance of practising English language activities aimed at developing social competencies to prepare a graduate nurse for appropriate nursing care. They have inspired the authors to work on grading the usefulness of the various types of language activities for student nurses.
