Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of gas infrastructure in the EU, focusing on cross-border pipelines, interconnections and LNG projects. It also analyses how the regulatory framework and policy choices of the EU compare with international level standards, for example the UNFCCC Framework and the Paris Agreement. It will explain the state of play, with an assessment of the available policy and regulatory options for development of infrastructure for renewable gases and hydrogen at scale for a timely decarbonisation of the gas grid. Building on the previous chapters on regulation, market and finance principles, this chapter provides a closer look at the implications of policy and regulation on infrastructure design and development, setting out projections on the future of gas infrastructure in the EU.
