Abstract

This chapter highlights the importance of the research which reveals the present state of the gas sector—and its transition. With this in mind, this chapter provides an introduction on the cost of EU energy and offers new approaches to shift the current EU energy security paradigm that enables subsidies for fossil fuels. However, this chapter acknowledges that as we approach 2050, the requirement to sharply decrease CO2 and other green house gas emissions means that the role of gas infrastructure in the EU will change drastically. This introductory chapter therefore highlights the urgency of examining the profitability of natural gas businesses in the future, including a focus on the issues of stranded assets and sectoral sustainability.
