The Five Subject Schools

Part of the The Arts in Higher Education book series (AHE)

Chapter 5 provides as full an account of dance practices inside and outside the curriculum as possible using only existing sources. Data is presented from archival searches (in person, by an archival librarian, or online), to see how each school represents dance in its web, print, and photo archives, including school and local newspapers, photos and playbills, yearbooks, and catalogs. Next, the researcher provides a review of library holdings in dance at each school, to see if each school’s mission and vision is reflected in the materials available to students. Finally, there is data gathered by an Internet search of, using the search terms “dance” and the name of the HBCU. The desire was to get a temporary snapshot of what is happening in dance on each campus at a given point in time.
