Abstract
This chapter describes the mission of primary care and current initiatives aimed at improving primary care. Readers learn about the strategies recommended by the Patient Centered Medical Home model and review research related to its effectiveness. Readers are also introduced to the Primary Care Behavioral Health model, a model for increasing delivery of behavioral health services in Primary Care that is associated with positive patient and implementation outcomes. The PCBH model brings a Behavioral Health Clinician to the primary care team and multiple studies show its promise as an effective population health approach to behavioral health service delivery. Later sections list out the challenges to improving access to behavioral health services in PC. The chapter concludes with a Checklist of recommended strategies for readers to use to improve primary care behavioral health services in their home communities.
