Abstract
Neonatal mortality rates in Malaysia are decreasing with the development of technological advancement and specialised care of newborns, as well as with the improved survival of low birth weight (LBW) babies and those with serious congenital malformations. Neonatal palliative care as a specialty is needed as a direct result of the increased infant survival rate and higher risks for complications and life-threatening events have led to the resuscitation of babies delivered at thresholds of viability, born with multiple congenital malformations and the provision of equitable healthcare in remote versus urban locations are additional reasons for the need for this essential service. The Malaysian multiculture community necessitates cultural competency and humility in palliative care delivery and education. Therefore, advances observed in maternal-foetal medicine and neonatology subspecialties in multicultural Malaysia would mean that integration of perinatal and neonatal palliative care into the healthcare system should be upheld to be of principal importance.
