Isolation of the Operating Field

Modern Operative Dentistry

Abstract

Avoiding moisture of the operating field can be obtained by application of a rubber dam or by using saliva absorbers. Rubber dam is mostly used when performing endodontic treatments in order to keep the operating field aseptic. However, rubber dam gives also the optimal conditions when using resin or resin-based dental materials, whose properties may become impaired by early contact with moisture. Several techniques for applying rubber dam are introduced in this chapter and can be used in different scenarios. Saliva absorbers such as cotton rolls, saliva ejectors, and retraction pads can be used in order to control moisture in the operating field. Ejectors are always recommended for removing the saliva from the oral cavity when isolation of the operating field is performed.
