Abstract
The word “piracy” implies theft, and to prevent it, legal systems are invoked. While the legal aspect of “piracy” is homogenous everywhere, its cultural meanings are different in different socioeconomic contexts. The commercial and unauthorized photocopying of books is relatively rare in the Western world, but in Bangladesh, it is ubiquitous and is an entrenched cultural practice.
