Abstract
Within the South Italian country a number of small towns host valuable architectures, in which the technical heritage and the material culture are actually peculiar, due to the fact that both the local-bioregionalist materials and the techniques of construction are unique and define the identity of the place. In one of these realities, a small town near Lecce, Veglie, an ancient and big building once destined to a factory of wine as well as oil, has lately been completely neglected and no apparent reuse has been previewed by both private enterprises and municipality administration. The characteristics of the building as far as materials, technologies, volumes, architectural quality, space distribution, and last but not least bioclimatic potential have been analyzed. A design methodology is here outlined and the application of sustainable technologies and materials are shown, aimed at improving the quality of the spaces as well as reducing the ecological footprint of the possible future interventions. The materials employed for a new proposed extension of the existing fabric are defined in the project and their sustainable levels are considered, mainly focusing on the rammed earth products and its benefits aimed at improving quality and ensuring facilities efficiency.
