Abstract
The sustainability paradigm has so far generally paid little attention to the specificity of the works on cultural heritage and historic buildings, an important Italian asset in terms of both quantity and quality. However, the identifying potential of historical buildings is a consistent driver of sustainability both in terms of the physical capitalization of architectural artifacts and urban contexts (the historic building is in fact a resilient building) and in terms of its powerful cultural capitalization that the buildings and historic Italian cities represent for their inhabitants. The paper intends to focus on the role of architectural survey as a disclosing approach of the potential identity of historical places and its propaedeutic function in the project of sustainable work on cultural heritage and historic buildings.
