Abstract
This chapter discusses the rise of ethnic genres of Nollywood as indicative of the ethnic diversity of Nigeria. It examines two basic ethnic genres: Kannywood, representing northern Nigeria, and Yoruba movies, representing the south. It critiques the similarities and differences among the genres, as well as the synergy among the versions. It discusses the implications of Nigeria’s film industry. The chapter evaluates the geo-cultural influences that shape the norms, themes, discourse and diffusion of both genres. It provides a comparative analysis of the etic–emic frames that contribute to the scope and limits of Nollywood and Kannywood’s regional, national and international embrace. It recommends steps necessary for strengthening the cultural role and impact of Nigeria’s and Africa’s burgeoning film industries.
