Abstract

I didn’t get into educational technology or higher education leadership because of some burning passion for the field or a desire to lead; my driver was desperation, pure and simple. I was poor, I was tired, and I was also recently remarried with young son, a new baby girl, and another boy on the way. I had reached the end of my rope, and something had to change. That change involved completing a Ph.D. in record time, working my way through tenure and promotion, and helping to found a hugely successful educational enterprise. Along the way, I learned some leadership and life lessons and found both a sense of purpose and of pride.
