Abstract

Custodial and detention workers classified as Law enforcement officers work in detention facilities at all levels of government. Municipal police agencies have jails and lockups. Sheriffs and their deputies, jailors, and other detention staff are defined by statute as law enforcement officers. The federal government defines any government official engaged in detention duties as a law enforcement officer.
