Abstract

Laser is widely used for treatment of retinal diseases. A laser induces retinal tissue reactions both in vitro and in vivo and is therefore used in multiple research and clinical applications. For a better understanding, it is important to understand and distinguish between different laser-tissue interactions. This chapter gives a broad overview over the physical properties of different laser systems and the subsequent ultrastructural and biological responses. Especially it shows the different laser-tissue effects and the different concepts of laser treatment modalities, e.g. continuous-wave, subthreshold and selective retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) treatment.
