Abstract

Evaluation of kidney tumors by cytology and core needle biopsy is increasingly utilized in the evaluation of kidney tumors. An understanding of the morphologic characteristics as well as the limitations of cytologic assessment is important, especially in the context of newly described entities and ancillary testing. The cytologic characteristics of the most commonly encountered kidney tumors are described herein, with inclusion of the differential diagnosis, suggested ancillary tests, and immunoperoxidase studies.
