Abstract
This chapter provides some helpful theoretical background that is essential for understanding relational and conflict dynamics and the ways the mediator can intervene in conflict, which are indispensable for contextualising the research study presented in this book. Therefore, Chap. 3 summarises some of the concepts and dynamics that are associated with the above and will be used as reference points in the case analyses. This chapter brings together perspectives from various disciplines including dispute resolution, psychology, and organisational studies, setting the stage for an interdisciplinary investigation of mediation.
