Abstract
One of the key methods of trying to “do” sustainability is benchmarking data across time and space. For example, an organization may compare its energy use over time and against other similar organizations to try to reduce energy consumption. Data collection and quantitative and qualitative analysis are thus crucial aspects within the field of environmental sustainability. Two of the most important recent innovations in sustainability are the use of big data analytical tools and the Internet of everything. Each of these areas helps bring together large amounts of information, often in real time, to make decisions that help improve sustainability. Remote sensing, maps, and geographic information systems are also important tools used to visualize and analyze information.
