Abstract

The objective of statistical mechanics is to calculate the measurable properties of macroscopic systems, starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian. These systems might be isolated or nearly isolated, stand-alone systems, or they might be in contact with some kind of environment with which they can interact in various ways.
