In Australia in 2016–2017, suicide prevention -specific programmes expended $A49.2 million out of a total of $A3 billion spent by the federal government on mental health. States probably spent about the same amount, so prevention expenditure was some $A100 million out of $8.7 billion. We think this is a major slab of money; others in this field believe it is far too little.
