Abstract
A set of concise reflections, speculations and suggestions on themes that are generally left out of the suicide discussion. Some matters are puzzling, some remain enigmatic, several resist solution, and a few offer some optimism. These notes encapsulate the essence of this book.
Each victim of suicide gives his act a personal stamp which expresses his temperament, the special conditions in which he is involved, and which, consequently, cannot be explained by the social and general causes of the phenomenon.
—Émile Durkheim
Nothing in my life has ever made me want to commit suicide more than people’s reaction to my trying to commit suicide.
