Visually Impaired Interaction with the Mobile Enhanced Travel Aid eBAT

Abstract

The visually impaired face problems in their daily life mobility. Despite the use of the white cane as the most popular aid, there is still no electronic aid to replace or complement its limitations. The eBAT (electronic Buzzer for Autonomous Travel) has been designed to provide information of the environment with a simple user interaction. Through a mobile phone, the blinds can perceive the distance to the obstacles with vibrations, using it as an haptic device. Results show that the device reduce the involuntary collisions at the cost of increasing the travel time.
