Abstract
We believe there is a valuable source of inspiration for BCI designers in the half century of innovations and technology development in the field of active implantable devices, mainly for cardiac applications, but also since about 30 years in neurological indications. Understanding how and why pioneers in the field of implanted electronics solved their specific problems will help us to define a sound methodology to design the BCI of the future. In addition to a careful analysis of achievements in the cardiac domain, we will focus on the early successes in neuro-technologies. This chapter will also identify what are the missing technology blocks which have limited a quicker extension of cardiac-inspired concepts to therapies aimed to nervous disorders.
